Concentration in Marine Science
The Boston University Marine Program offers an interdisciplinary Bachelor of Arts degree in Marine Science through the College of Arts & Sciences. As one of the premier marine programs in the country, we offer students the chance to participate in an interdisciplinary, hands-on curriculum taught by leading faculty working in collaboration with internationally renowned marine institutions. Our academic partners include the New England Aquarium, Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, and the Sea Education Association. The concentration in marine science includes courses offered by the departments of Biology, Earth Sciences, and Geography & Environment.
The concentration requires a foundation course in oceanography plus three courses to fulfill the marine breadth requirement, including marine biology and a choice of two additional courses in marine chemistry, marine geology, and/or physical oceanography. Students also participate in at least one four-course Marine Semester, during which courses are offered in an intensive, research-oriented block format. If a student’s schedule permits, participation in additional Marine Semesters is encouraged. A minor in marine science, which may be of particular interest to biology majors, is also available.
