Where are you from?

Andover, Massachusetts

What is your major and how did you choose it?

I am majoring in Biology with a Specialization in Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, and Genetics (CMG). I really enjoy learning about the natural world and how humans and other organisms function at the cellular level. From a young age I knew I wanted to become a dentist, so when deciding what to major in, I thought taking courses that would easily fulfill the pre-dental pre-requisites was a plus.

What is your favorite biology course?

My favorite biology course so far has been BI 315: Systems Physiology. I loved learning about each biological system, particularly the renal system. This class sparked my interest in the kidney function and led me to find a research position in the field.

What research do you do?

I recently started working with Dr. Weining Lu in his nephrology and genetics lab. We primarily focus on understanding congenital anomalies in kidney and urinary tract development.

How did you get your research position?

I explored the UROP website and read about each professor’s research, then emailed those that had conducted research in a topic that I was interested in.

How has your research tied into your classroom learning?

Currently, I am working on genotyping samples of mouse tails. This utilizes techniques learned in both lectures and lab courses such as gel electrophoresis, PCR, pipetting skills, and preparation of solutions/dilutions.

What extracurricular activities are you involved in?

Pre-Dental Society, Club Synchronized Swimming Team, Biology Peer Mentor Program, Let’s Smile Boston, and Volunteer in the Dental Clinic at Franciscan Children’s Hospital.

What is your favorite dining spot on or around campus?

Noodle Street

What is your favorite BU memory?

My favorite memory was the BU vs. BC game. I attended with a few friends and it was amazing seeing the school spirit and the packed arena!

What’s one BU tip you wish you knew sooner?

There are so many great resources on campus in place to ensure you have the best experience academically and professionally. Reach out to people and ask for help from your professors, peers, tutors, LA/TF’s etc. Everyone is willing to help you understand the concepts and wants to see you succeed!

What are your post-graduation plans?

After graduation, I hope to attend dental school and possibly pursue a specialty in orthodontics.
