Emily Speranza has been awarded a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship. The NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) is highly competitive: this year only 2,000 fellowships were awarded out of more than 16,000 applicants. Congratulations Emily!
Vinay Kartha and Adam Labadorf’s work in Rick Myers’ lab has been published in the new issue of BMC Medical Genomics. Read it here: miR-10b-5p expression in Huntington’s disease brain relates to age of onset and the extent of striatal involvement
Farren Isaacs (PhD, ’04) and his team at Yale have published a report in the journal Nature. The report, “Recoded organisms engineered to depend on synthetic amino acids,” was recently featured on All Things Considered and in the New Yorker. Dr. Isaacs is an Assistant Professor at Yale, in the Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology department.
Congratulations to Nacho Caballero for his work in John Connor's lab. Their BMC Genomics article was published online November 6th and has already been given the “Highly Accessed” designation. Allyson Byrd received the First Place Poster Prize for her presentation, “Strain Tracking of Organisms in Metagenomic Samples of the Skin Microbiome,” during the International Workshop on Bioinformatics and Systems Biology in Berlin. Vinay Kartha, Amy Li and Mike Quintin took home the Second Place Poster Prize for their Challenge Project in Stefano Monti’s lab, “Assembling the mitochondrial minicircle genome in Trypanosoma brucei.” The IBSB has been held annually since the first workshop in Berlin in August of 2001, and this year 15 students from BU Bioinformatics presented their work.
Evan Appleton's work with a multidisciplinary team from Synberc (Synthetic Biology Engineering Research Center) has been published ahead of print in Science Xpress: Regulating Gene Drives. The paper has also been written about in The New York Times, National Geographic, The Boston Globe and Nova.
Great work Evan!
Joshua Campbell (PhD, ’12) and other researchers from the TCGA Researcher Network have co-authored a study published in the journal Nature. “Comprehensive Molecular Profiling of Lung Adenocarcinoma,” has been gaining a lot of attention this week. As the Analysis Coordinator, Dr. Campbell was a primary contributor to the study. He is currently a postdoctoral fellow in Mathew Meyerson’s lab at the Broad Institute. Dr. Meyerson, also at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, is the lead investigators on the project.
