The Center for Psychiatric Rehabilitation at Boston University has conducted several research and training projects in psychiatric rehabilitation in order to address the multicultural needs of Latinos with psychiatric disabilities. Its mission is to provide bilingual training, consultation and develop rehabilitation materials that provide effective and culturally competent care to Latinos with psychiatric disabilities and their families. This new intervention will provide mobile HIV outreach, education, testing and mental health counseling services in the Western Massachusetts ’ region provided by one of the Center’s long time collaborators, Tapestry Health. The Western Massachusetts geographic area has one of the highest HIV incidence rates related to injection drug use in the nation and the Latino population is disproportionately affected by the epidemic. Services will include: HIV risk avoidance education and supplies; referrals to van medical and mental health staff and to substance abuse treatment services; HIV testing, and STI and Hepatitis testing; and mental health screening, counseling and referrals to psychiatric care.

The Latino Health Institute researches, assesses, and documents the health conditions of the Latino community in Greater Boston and Massachusetts.  It operates over 60 public health programs from its offices in Boston, Lowell, and Brockton. The Edgar Barros Bidon Project
The Edgar Barros Bidon Project is named in honor of a Cape Verdean Scholar from UMass Amherst. Barros' tragic death during his visit to a volcano in Cape Verde brought together his friends at UMass Amherst to create a project that would represent his dedication and devotion to helping his native country, Cape Verde.
