FIRST & SECOND YEAR CURRICULUM

Requirements for the Masters in Medical Anthropology and Cross-Cultural Practice degree include the following:

  1. Satisfactory completion of 60 credits of course work, to include:
  • the seven required core seminars, including the summer fieldwork course (27 credit hours)
  • the required Special Project directed study, for writing the student’s final project (4 credit hours)
  • 20 credit hours of approved electives in the student’s area of concentration, either from the program electives or from among the electives from the greater Boston University campus
  • the remaining credits in other approved electives (which can include the student’s area of concentration) at the 500-level or higher.
  1. Two years of full-time residence and course work (including summer)
  2. Five one-day professional-development workshops
  3. Completion of a 15,000-word MA thesis

 

MACCP CURRICULUM 2009-2010

Year-1 (Fall Semester 2009)
    Required Courses

  • History and Theory of Medical Anthropology, Part I (3 credits)
  • Anthropological and Qualitative Research Methods and Design (3 credits)
  • Two elective Courses (see program electives or electives from the greater B.U. campus)
  • One-Day Professional Development Workshop: Literature Searches and Library Research

Year-1 (Spring Semester 2010)
    Required Courses

  • IRB Proposal Development and Writing (3 credits)
  • History and Theory in Medical Anthropology, Part II (3 credits)
  • Two elective Courses (see program electives or electives from the greater B.U. campus)
  • One-Day Professional Development Workshop: Researching and Writing Cross-Cultural Teaching Cases

Year-1 (Summer Semester 2010)
    Required Courses

  • Fieldwork/Field Practicum Experience (Summer between Year 1 and Year 2)
  • One-Day Professional Development Workshop: Grant Writing and Funding Sources
