Education for Residents
Teaching medical school
postgraduates, residents,
fellows and faculty members,
who are all closely involved
in teaching other colleagues,
allied and junior members
of the medical teams,
as well as medical students
in the school, has proven
to be an effective method
of institutionalizing
our approach. We have
activated this "train
the trainer" strategy
in a variety of settings.
1) Dr. Linda Barnes introduces
new residents in the Pediatrics
primary care track to
sites and understandings
of healing, in the neighborhoods
served by BMC, using the
BHLP website.
2) Dr. Barnes presents
a pre-clinic conference
for residents, on cross-cultural
integrative history-taking
skills.
3) Dr. Barnes attends
Morning Report weekly,
to raise cross-cultural
questions when appropriate.
4) Additionally, Dr. Zuckerman
leads weekly reflection
sessions with residents
that regularly deal with
cross-cultural issues.
5) The BHLP has developed
a model for writing teaching
cases that bring together
complex cultural and medical
issues. Residents have
served as co-authors of
these cases, with the
goal of training them
in this particular model
of case-writing.
