Boston University Winter Guard
The Boston University Winter Guard is the newest ensemble to join the BU Bands program. The BU Winter Guard started in 2012 as a way for current Color Guard members to keep spinning during the off season and for interested students to learn more about the Marching Band program. This year the BU Winter Guard is looking to expand and perform on and around campus during the spring semester.
Guard members will focus on mastering dance, flag, and rifle skills as well as learning fun, artistic, and challenging routines. The ensemble is led by world-class instructors who design choreography to be challenging but attainable so that all members can enjoy learning and spinning together.
Members do not need any Color Guard or dance experience to join the ensemble. There are no auditions to get in, but interested members must possess a willingness to learn. Our members have a wide range of skill, and so our instructors teach all of the skills necessary for anyone to be a part of the BU Winter Guard.
What is the practice schedule?
We craft our rehearsal & performance schedule with the BU student’s academic schedule in mind. Members will be able to handle academic work, other student activities, and Winter Guard as part of their schedule – and do it at a high level worthy of BU.
The final schedule will be announced in late January, but you can expect at least one rehearsal during the week in the evening, and one rehearsal on the weekend. There will also be a camp weekend in late February.
Can I join if I am not a BU student?
Yes! If you are a college-aged student in the greater Boston area and don’t have a similar ensemble at your school, you are welcome to join.
Do I get class credit?
This ensemble does not currently receive class credit, but if you are interested, it is an excellent way to prepare for Marching Band which DOES receive class credit.
Is there a fee?
A small fee of $40 is required to cover equipment, supplies, and meals during the camp weekend.
What previous experience is required?
No previous experience is required; we will teach you everything you need to know but a positive attitude is a must!
Am I required to attend every rehearsal?
During the first week, we welcome all who are interested to participate in rehearsals. After the first week, members are required to attend every rehearsal unless approved otherwise by the instructors. (Legitimate academic or “life” conflicts are certainly honored when they arise.)
What equipment will we be using?
We will focus on flag, rifle, and dance.
