Support the BU Band!

The BU Athletic Bands program is very grateful for all of the financial support it has received from alumni, parents, and friends. It would be impossible to continue to function as a band without your help.

Participation in the BU BAND is a valuable experience for the members in our program. The positive growth in all facets of the BU BAND program, however, has come at a cost. Our largest concerns for financial support are:

  • Travel
  • Equipment
  • Facilities

Travel
Pep Band: The BU Pep Band travels to all post season tournament games in support of Men’s Ice Hockey, Women’s Ice Hockey, Men’s Basketball, and Women’s Basketball. The BU Pep Band also travels to both the Men’s and Women’s Beanpots.

Winter Percussion Ensemble: The BU Winter Percussion Ensemble competes at the world championships every year in Dayton Ohio, as well as at local and regional events. In 2011, the BU WPE finished in 10th place at the World Championships and brought home the “Fan’s Favorite” award.

Marching Band: The BU Marching Band travels to approximately 6 off campus shows per year. As the band grows, additional busses and trucks are needed for each of these shows to transport our members and equipment.

Equipment
Positive growth requires the Band to purchase enough instruments for all students who want to participate. For the 2009-2010 academic year, more tubas, trumpets, saxophones, marimbas, vibraphones were purchased due to these sections seeing increased membership.

Upkeep of the instruments currently in our inventory also drains the budget. A new drum line was purchased in 2007 and each summer, funds are allocated to replace aging instruments in our inventory.

Facilities
This December, a renovation project was begun on the home of the BU BAND, 278 Babcock St. These renovations included:

  • A student leader office area/small ensemble room.
  • A brand new entrance off of Babcock St.
  • A history and information hallway.

These renovations cost $37,000. The university contributed $25,000 towards these renovations leaving the BU BAND to fund the additional $12,000.

Helping the students in the BU BAND has never been easier. The Friends of the BU Athletic Bands account is now linked to the university’s “Take Pride” web site. You can use your credit card on the Alumni Web secure online web form. When using the Alumni Web’s secure online form, please be sure to choose the FRIENDS OF AHTLETIC BANDS (#3980-3) from the drop down menu and to drop us an email at bands@bu.edu so we can thank you appropriately.
