Boston University Scarlet Band

The Boston University “Scarlet Band” is a select ensemble that performs during June and July on the campus of BU and around Boston.  The main purpose of the Scarlet Band is to serve as the “house band” for the University by performing at each New Student Orientation held throughout June and July, and to represent the music-making opportunities available at BU to incoming students.

  • Members of the Scarlet Band can receive FREE housing on campus for the entire summer if needed
  • Rehearsals are one evening a week
  • Performances are Thursday mornings, Thursday evenings, and Fridays at noon
  • Meals are provided at the Thursday evening performances
  • There are a few weeks completely free of commitment in May, and a few free weeks in August as well
  • The Scarlet Band plays a vast array of musical styles, and the experience is both challenging and enjoyable
  • Members of the Scarlet Band can still work or attend most summer classes around the manageable ensemble schedule

This is a great opportunity for BU musicians looking to stay in Boston for free over the summer and play!  Please email Aaron Goldberg at to set-up a brief audition in February (dates TBA).  Auditions will be short, and will consist of excerpts from a technical and a lyrical etude, as well as an excerpt of your choosing.   (Note:  students who participate in any BU Bands ensembles – Concert or Athletic – typically get priority over non-BU Bands members)

See the Scarlet Band at Orientation this summer!
