Boston University Scarlet Band

first SB perf 2012

The Boston University Scarlet Band is a select ensemble that performs during the summer on the BU campus and around Boston. The main purpose of the Scarlet Band is to serve as the “house band” for the University by performing at each New Student Orientation held throughout June and July and to represent the music-making opportunities available at BU to incoming students.

  • Members of the Scarlet Band can receive FREE housing on campus for the entire summer if needed
  • Rehearsals are one evening a week
  • Performances are Thursday mornings and Friday afternoons
  • Meals are provided on Thursday evenings
  • There are a few weeks completely free of performance and rehearsal commitment in May and in August as well

To Join

This is a great opportunity for BU Bands musicians looking to stay in Boston for free over the summer and perform!

To audition for Scarlet Band, you must have performed in a BU Bands ensemble (Marching Band, Pep Band, Marching Percussion Ensemble, Concert Band, All-Campus Orchestra, Big Band, or Jazz Combo) for at least one whole semester during the academic year in which you are auditioning. You must also plan on being an enrolled student at BU in the fall semester after your summer Scarlet Band experience (Scarlet Band is not open to graduating seniors).

Auditions are typically held in late February and consist of short musical excerpts (provided) plus an excerpt of your own choosing. Audition details are emailed to members of BU Bands ensembles in January. If you have any questions about auditions or would like to request the material, please email

See the Scarlet Band at Orientation this summer!
