Jazz Ensembles: 2008 - 2009 Vocal Jazz Auditions

Vocal Jazz Audition procedure:

Step 1: Schedule your audition

Please note: A Boston University user name and kerboros password is required. If you do not have one, click here for "Early Bird" registration to obtain one.

Everyone

Required piece number 1 (First verse, Please plan to sing it in the written key but the last 6 measures can be sung an octave lower.)

Required piece number 2

You must choose the alto, tenor, or bass part (NOT soprano). This is to assess your skill in learning and holding harmonies. MP3s are posted to help you rehearse, each with a different voice part highlighted over the original recording.

 

Song of your Choice

Please prepare one song for your choice, to be sung a cappella (but please bring a lead sheet). The song must be in jazz style and no longer than 3 minutes.

Singing Intervals

You may be asked to sing intervals to test your ear (such as "perfect fifth, "minor third," or "major seventh").

Step 3: Register for the appropriate course

Upon placement into an ensemble, everyone must register for one of the following no-credit courses:

Big Band: CFA MU 094
Honors Combo: CFA MU 095
Jazz Workshop: CFA MU 096
Vocal Jazz: CFA MU 098

Students can receive one credit for playing in an ensemble. Those students wishing to receive course credit for their participation should also register for the following:

Big Band: CFA MU 194
Honors Combo: CFA MU 195
Jazz Workshop: CFA MU 196
Vocal Jazz: CFA MU 198
