Concert Ensembles: Policies
Auditions
Participation in the Concert Ensembles is contingent on an audition. Auditions are held in the beginning of the Fall semester and additionally in the Spring semester if needed. All participants must register with the University Registrar for the appropriate course. All of the audition and registration information can be found on the individual ensemble pages.
Music
For each concert rotation, ensemble participants will receive their own set of parts from the ensemble manager. Failure to return music at the end of a concert rotation will result in charges to that individual's student account.
Concert Dress
For the All-Campus Orchestra and Concert Band, concert attire is as follows:
- Women - All-black shoes, floor-length skirt or dress slacks with a black top, or a long black dress.
- Men - All-black shoes and socks, black suit or tuxedo, white shirt and black bow tie.
Attendance
In providing music opportunities for the non-music major, rehearsal time is kept to a minimum so students have time to concentrate on academics. Missing one rehearsal is sometimes as much as 20% of the rehearsal time for that concert rotation. Additionally, ensemble schedules are published far enough in advance so that students can plan accordingly.
- Attendance is mandatory for all rehearsals. (Serious illness, family emergency and religious holidays are only possible exceptions.) If a student foresee any conflicts, that person may need to reconsider his or her participation in the ensemble for the current semester.
- Players must be in their seat, warming up, and ready to rehearse five minutes prior to the published rehearsal start time. If a regular conflict exists, students must discuss this matter with the ensemble director prior to the beginning of the semester.
- Planned absences and late arrivals must be reported to the Band Office via the Absence Excuse web form. This form must be filled out by 4 PM the day of weekday events, or by 4 PM Friday for weekend events. We encourage students to submit this form well in advance to provide ample time for approval notification. Failure to fill out this form will indicate lack of interest in the ensemble and can be grounds for dismissal.
In order to ensure a quality musical experience for all members of the ensembles we must enforce these expectations. Your cooperation and understanding are greatly appreciated.
