Scarlet Band Policies

The Scarlet Band is a select group representing the best of what the Boston University Bands program has to offer. The ensemble was formed in the summer of 2006 for the purpose of promoting awareness of the BU Bands program to incoming BU students during orientation events. Now the ensemble’s mission has evolved to include performance at various university events and functions in addition to its duties to the BU Bands program during the summer. Players represent a diverse cross-section of the performing ensembles available to students at the university including Marching Band, Pep Band, Jazz Band, Concert Band, and All-Campus Orchestra.

Becoming a Member

Membership in the Scarlet Band is by audition or invitation. Preference will be given to those musicians who have had previous Scarlet Band experience, and those who anticipate an extended commitment that includes the possibility of playing throughout the summer.

Commitment/Stipend:

During the academic year, members of the Scarlet Band will be contracted for approximately 21 performances plus rehearsals.

The Summer Scarlet Band members are eligible for free summer housing at BU.

Substitute Policy:

If you are unable attend a performance and require a substitute, you must fill out an Absence Request Form and find a substitute player. Additionally, you must also contact Zach DeVries with confirmation of the substitute player at least one week in advance. Since the stipend for participation in the ensemble is given as a book scholarship, members who require a substitute must pay $25 directly to the player as the sub fee. Consistently missed performances will result in forfeiture of membership in the ensemble.

Rehearsals

Rehearsals will be held once per week on Tuesdays from 6-8pm in the Band Room at 278 Babcock St. With a small ensemble of this nature, it is crucial that all members be present at the rehearsal in order for the band to grow and improve. Therefore, in order to be member, regular attendance at weekly rehearsals is required. If for any reason you cannot attend rehearsal, you must submit an absence request at least a week in advance. Consistent absences can result in your spot being forfeited.
