What is the Scarlet Band?

The Scarlet Band is a band that was created in the summer of 2006 to represent all of the BU Bands by performing at the summer New Student Orientations which take place over 7 weeks in the summer.

Who is eligible for membership in the Scarlet Band?

The Scarlet Band is a select audition-only ensemble. Past and current members of the Scarlet Band have been members of the BU Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, Marching Band, Pep Band, Big Band, Honors Combo, Symphony Orchestra and All-Campus Orchestra.

How do I become a member?

Membership in the Scarlet Band is by audition or invitation only and is eligible only to those who can stay in Boston for the summer.

What is the time commitment?

All members of the Scarlet Band are required to stay in Boston through Commencement Weekend (May 16-17, 2009) and to perform with the Commencement Band. Rehearsals will begin the week following Commencement. The New Student Orientations begin Thursday, June 16, 2009.

What is the typical week like once the New Student Orientations begin?

The Scarlet Band rehearses every Tuesday from 6pm-8pm. The band performs on Thursday mornings at the Welcome Session (7:30 am), Thursday afternoons at the Welcome BBQ (5:30 pm) and at the Closing Program on Fridays (noon).

With the band’s schedule, do I have time for work and/or classes?

Absolutely! Almost all of the band’s commitments fall outside the normal academic day and outside of a normal workday. We have had members take classes, maintain internships and work full-time while spending their summer with the band.

Are the other opportunities to work with the band?

Yes. We also have a summer jazz band, Scarlet Jazz, that performs on campus as well. There are also opportunities to work in the BU Bands office as part of our recruitment team, office team and summer staff.

What are the benefits of membership in the Scarlet Band?

All eligible members of the Scarlet Band receive free summer housing from the university. This housing award is worth over $3,000. There is also ample time to take courses, to work outside jobs or to participate in internships. In addition, limited paid positions are available in the BU Bands office.
