The Adolescent Traumatic Stress and Substance Abuse Treatment Center, in association with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and the National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN) was delighted to present the Adolescent Traumatic Stress and Substance Abuse Summer Expert Panel Meeting on June 20 and 21, 2005.

At this meeting, over 60 experts from the fields of substance abuse and traumatic stress treatment gathered to discuss topics including...

  • Essential Treatment Components for Adolescent Traumatic Stress and Substance Abuse
  • Reaching TSSA Youth: Strategies for Engagement in Treatment
  • Raising Awareness About the Needs of TSSA Youth: Sending the Right Message to the Community
  • In the Service of TSSA Youth: Dissemination and Training Among Clinicians and Other Provider

Presentations by notable clinicians, researchers, and other professionals such as Robert Pynoos, M.D., M.P.H., Lisa Najavits, Ph.D., Glenn Saxe, M.D., and Liza Suárez, Ph.D., offered an up-to-date view of the issues facing the assessment and treatment of adolescents with co-morbid traumatic stress and substance abuse. During the meeting, additional events included panel discussions with other experts in an effort bridge the fields of adolescent traumatic stress and substance abuse.

While the Adolescent Traumatic Stress and Substance Abuse Summer Expert Panel Meeting has passed, the ATSSA hopes that continued collaboration can be fostered in an effort to unite these two fields.
