BA in Astronomy

Astronomy majors gain exposure to the principles of astronomy, physics, and mathematics, and learn to communicate astronomical information effectively to a variety of audiences using the spoken and written word. They develop the skill to think critically and evaluate, interpret, and solve problems related to astronomy, physics, and general scientific topics. The BA in Astronomy prepares students for entry into the competitive science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) workplace, with technical skills and problem-solving experience providing advantage in the modern, high-tech world.

BA in Astronomy and Physics

Astronomy & Physics (A&P) majors gain a broad knowledge of the principles of astronomy and physics, including planets in the solar system, stars and star formation, the nature of the interstellar medium, galaxies and cosmology, mechanics, electricity and magnetism, statistical mechanics, quantum mechanics, and mathematical methods of physics. Students learn to communicate astronomical information effectively to a variety of audiences using the spoken and written word. They develop the skill to think critically and evaluate, interpret, and solve problems related to astronomy, physics, and general scientific topics. The A&P BA is a pathway to research-oriented careers that prepares students for either immediate workforce entry or further, graduate-level study in astronomy and related sciences. Students who are interested in applying to graduate school to study astronomy or astrophysics are generally advised to choose this major.

BA in Geophysics and Planetary Sciences

The major in Geophysics & Planetary Sciences provides students with broad knowledge of the principles of astronomy, especially in relation to geophysics and planetary sciences topics such as planetary geology, planetary atmospheres, and planetary interiors. A bachelor’s degree in Geophysics & Planetary Sciences prepares students for research in geophysics, geodynamics, seismology, and planetary science or careers in science education, management, geotechnical consulting, computing, or science writing.
