University of Pennsylvania / Univ. Museum

 

Asst Prof/Asst Curator Near East Section

The Department of Anthropology of the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology invite applications from archaeologists with qualifications in the study of the ancient Near East to fill the position of the Robert H. Dyson, Jr. Assistant Professor and Assistant Curator of the Museum's Near East Section. The position will be a tenure track appointment. The faculty appointment will be in the Department of Anthropology with a parallel appointment as an assistant curator in the Near East Section of the University of Pennsylvania Museum. Applicants should have a strong theoretical interest in cultural complexity, the Near East Section's collections, and public education, as well as plans for active field research involving students. The successful candidate will be involved in the ongoing development of undergraduate and graduate curricula in archaeology within the context of an anthropology program that encourages dialogue across the subfields as well as between disciplines.

The Department will begin reviewing applications in January of 2004 and will continue to search until an appropriate candidate has been identified. University of Ottawa

The Department of Classics and Religious Studies of the University of Ottawa announces the opening of a full-time, tenure-track position for an assistant or associate professor starting 1 July 2004.

Field of specialization: Judaeo-Christian Religions in Antiquity; PhD relevant to the field of religious studies is required. Preference will be given to candidates who have sufficient refereed publications to qualify for supervising graduate research at the University of Ottawa. Preference will be given to candidates whose research and teaching experience demonstrates competence in one or more of the following subspecialties: religions and cultures; women and religions; social scientific study of religion.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach and direct research at the undergraduate and graduate levels in English and in French. This is a bilingual position and active and demonstrated teaching competence in both languages is a condition of tenure. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience, and consistent with the University's Collective Agreement. University of Southern California

The School of Religion, the Department of Classics and the Department of Art History of the University of Southern California invite applications for a tenure-track appointment in archaeology, assistant to senior associate level. The area of specialization is open and the home department for the tenure-line will be dependent upon the applicant's area of specialization. Applicants should be able to participate in interdisciplinary teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels. Archaeological experience and participation in field projects are highly desirable. Ph.D. expected by August, 2004.

Oriental Institute Museum, Univ. of Chicago

Museum Director

The University of Chicago's Oriental Institute is an internationally recognized research center for studying the archaeological and textual record of the ancient Near East. A primary unit within the Institute is its Museum, which houses over 126,000 registered objects from across the Near East.

We seek applicants for the position of Museum Director, who reports to the Director of the Oriental Institute and interacts regularly with the Institute's research faculty, who serve as its governing board. Candidates must have academic experience in a Near Eastern field of specialty, ideally in one of the areas covered by the Oriental Institute's collections (Egypt, Nubia, Mesopotamia, Syria-Palestine, Anatolia, Iran) and have demonstrated experience in curatorial duties, exhibit development, and grant writing. The Museum of the Oriental Institute is in the midst of a multi-year reinstallation process that will provide the right candidate with the opportunity to have a direct impact on the Museum's collections, gallery design, and future exhibits. SUNY Stony Brook

Assistant Professor in Hebrew Bible/Old Testament

The Department of Classical and Near Eastern Studies in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota seeks to make a tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of Hebrew Bible/Old Testament, to begin fall semester, 2004. The field of research specialization within Hebrew Bible is open. Additional research field(s) that contribute a comparative dimension are desirable, with preference for religion and/or Near Eastern archaeology. Teaching expectations include a range of undergraduate courses on biblical and cognate literature that contribute to the general education mission of the College of Liberal Arts. Candidates will also be expected to teach upper-level courses that introduce the texts in original languages and serve strong undergraduate major and minor programs in Religious Studies, Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology, Ancient Studies, and Jewish Studies. The candidate should also be able to contribute graduate-level courses to the departments newly created comparative Masters track in the Religions of Antiquity.

The department integrates the disciplinary perspectives of Classics, ancient Near Eastern Studies, and Archaeology, to create a coherent program in the study of the ancient Mediterranean, which includes the cultures, languages, and material remains of Greece, Rome, and the ancient Near East. Faculty have a strong commitment to the historical and philological analysis of the literature, culture, and religions of this period. Preference will be given to applicants who share these broad perspectives and can contribute to their development. The successful candidate will also be invited to join an expanding inter-disciplinary Center of Jewish Studies, with faculty expertise ranging from antiquity to modernity.

Applicants must demonstrate a strong commitment to academic research and publication, as well as to undergraduate and graduate instruction. They should possess expert philological skills in classical Hebrew and relevant research languages, both ancient and modern, and will be expected to teach classical Hebrew at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Candidates must have completed all requirements for the Ph.D. or equivalent degree in ancient Near Eastern Studies, Religious Studies, or other appropriate field by the time of appointment.

Pennsylvania State University

Penn State is seeking candidates for a rank-open, tenure-line appointment in Hebrew. Tenure-track or tenured according to rank and qualifications. Starting date: August 2004 preferred. Ph.D. in Hebrew, Comparative Literature, Near Eastern Studies, Jewish Studies, or related field, and relevant teaching experience required. Candidates must have broad knowledge of the Hebrew language: areas of further specialization and research program may include (but are not limited to) Classical, Rabbinic or Modern Hebrew, comparative approaches to Hebrew texts (including ancient, medieval, and/or modern), comparative Semitics, classical Hebrew elements in later literatures, literatures of the diaspora and Israel, Israelite or Jewish texts, parshanut or Jewish thought. Ability to teach Hebrew at all levels of the curriculum required. Knowledge of additional languages a plus.

The successful candidate will help direct and develop our Hebrew language curriculum. S/he will hold an appointment in the Jewish Studies Program, with a tenure home, as appropriate, in the Department of Comparative Literature or the Department of Classics and Ancient Mediterranean Studies or another unit. Salary competitive. Our tenure-track teaching load is 4 courses per year (2 per semester).

Hebrew Union College

Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, Los Angeles, announces the opening of a junior level tenure-track position in Hebrew Bible, beginning July 1, 2004. Primary responsibilities include teaching and mentoring graduate students in our rabbinic, education, masters' and doctoral programs. In addition, the position involves some teaching in the undergraduate Judaic studies program which our institution provides for the University of Southern California.

We seek candidates who have completed a Ph.D. in Hebrew Bible. Areas of specialization within the field of Hebrew Bible are open; however, the ability to teach exegetical and critical skills is indispensable.

Additional research fields that contribute to understanding the Bible are welcome. HUC-JIR faculty members are expected to participate in the communal and religious life of a Reform Jewish seminary and the Jewish community.

American University - Beirut

Assistant Professor, Department of History and Archaeology & Civilization Sequence Program.
The Faculty of Arts and Sciences at the American University of Beirut invites applications for academic positions in the Department of History and Archaeology in the fields of Near Eastern Archaeology with emphasis on Prehistory and Bronze Age Archaeology of the Levant; and in Modern Middle East History. Although specialists in all related fields and geographic areas will be considered, the Department particularly welcomes applications from experts on North Africa, post-Ottoman Turkey, the Arabian Peninsula or Modern Iran, as well as in Cultural History. Successful candidates are expected to engage in research, to be qualified to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and be qualified to supervise student research and thesis writing.
