From this page, you may view or download digitized QuickTime movies exemplifying the grammatical ASL utterances cited in the article. In some cases, the construction in the glossed example is exemplified on video with a sentence that differs slightly (e.g., in terms of the specific lexical items used). This is indicated by the label "variant" underneath the video icon.

These materials are also available on CD-ROM at cost.

In order to make use of these materials, you must have QuickTime 3.0 or later (www.apple.com/quicktime), which is available for both Macintosh and non-Macintosh platforms.

If you wish to download the movie files from this site:

Before you download: If your browser is configured to view pdf and/or QuickTime files via a plug-in, you will need to option-click (Macintosh) or right-click (non-Macintosh) on the links in order to download the file to your local system.

NOTE: If you are using Aladdin's Stuffit Expander software, please make sure you are using a recent version. (If you are using Stuffit Expander 4.5 for Macintosh, make sure its preferences are set to not perform any cross-platform conversion on text files. If conversion is performed, the pdf files will become corrupted; see http://www.aladdinsys.com/support/techsupport/mac/dlx/dlx9.html.)

The table below lists the examples (in gloss form) for which movies are available. Click on the movie icon(s) next to the example to download the movie(s) (multiple icons indicate that multiple sample movies are available; in some cases, the example is signed by more than one native signer).

The quality of the video examples in this collection varies greatly. Some of the videos were produced several years ago (these are of lower quality than more recent examples). Others are of significantly higher quality than the rest: these examples were collected in the National Center for Sign Language and Gesture Resources (NCSLGR), which has just been established. For these examples, additional views are available, as the data were collected using four synchronized digital video cameras. One of these views is a side view and another is a close-up of the face. The availability of additional views is indicated by the NCSLGR icon.
