Types of data: continuous signing

Thus far, we have collected data of continuous signing from native signers of ASL of the following kinds:

  • sets of sentences elicited to illustrate different possible sentence structures in ASL
  • sets of sentences aimed specifically at computer vision researchers, containing a fixed vocabulary with signs occurring in many different contexts and word orders
  • short stories told in ASL
  • two 20-25 minute dialogues between two native signers (with two views of each signer: a front view and a close-up of the face)
  • multiple synchronized video files showing different views of handshapes used in ASL

For most of the data, there are four views available: two stereoscopic front views, one side view, and one close-up of the face (although for some sentences, not all of these views area available).

You will also find video collected of various ASL handshapes available on the Web.

Previously distributed on CD-ROM -- now accessible through the DAI (above)

The following CD-ROM's contain elicited utterances (volumes 1 and 2) and short narratives (volumes 3-7). Viewing the videos and annotations on these CD-ROM's requires SignStream version 2.2.2 for Macintosh (non-Intel) computers; it runs as a Classic application.

Information about the conventions used for annotation is available: See reports 11 and 13.

Access to annotations and video files in multiple formats available over the Internet

These data will be accessible, and searchable, over the Internet. Our web interface is currently under development, and additional features will be available soon, including a facility for readily downloading video files of interest, in a variety of formats, as well as XML files containing the information from the SignStream annotations. (The SignStream application is not required to access the information that will very soon be available from our Web site.)

This site will also include various kinds of statistics about the contents of this data set.

Citation forms

Additional data for citation forms of close to 3,000 signs will also be available soon. Further information will be available from http://www.bu.edu/asllrp/. These video files (from multiple angles) will include linguistic annotations: glosses (with start and end frames identified), and start and end handshapes on each hand.
