Undergraduate and graduate students interested in pursuing research and fieldwork in East and Southeast Asian archaeology, cultural heritage management, early art history, and other related fields should contact Profs. Robert Murowchick and David Cohen to discuss their interests. Our students have carried out excavations, survey, geophysics, language studies, and other research in China, Mongolia, Japan, Singapore, Indonesia, Cambodia, and Taiwan, and we have a wide range of contacts in other countries, as well.
ICEAACH is also looking for student volunteers and interns to assist in projects related to our archaeological field research work in China and to our digital data management projects. We can provide exciting opportunities for you to explore the latest web technologies to make our extensive imagery, research notes, and map collections more readily available to the public.
The ICEAACH Library has internship opportunities in East Asian librarianship available. Please contact our Librarian, Dr. Jeffrey Kao.
Public Outreach
ICEAACH carries out many outreach programs throughout the Boston area. We receive many requests each year to work with elementary, middle school, and high school teachers and students to teach them about East Asian archaeology, history, and geography, and also about archaeology in general. This outreach work can provide great teaching experience opportunities to students, allow for creative outlets archaeology students don't usually get (such as designing innovative hands-on activities), and help spread the word about the important knowledge that archaeology provides. Please contact us if you are interested in joining our list of available volunteers. We also can provide training and materials.
Database-Backed Website Programmer Wanted
The International Center for East Asian Archaeology & Cultural History (ICEAACH), Boston University (located in Kenmore Square), is looking for students for possible programming and design work on a database-backed website to be used by archaeologists working in East Asia. Two MIT graduate students previously designed and programmed a working prototype for the website as a project for the course Software Engineering for Web Applications. Relevant skills include: 1) W2K3 administration; 2) C# and ASP.NET; 3) T-SQL and SQL Server 2005; 3) SOAP. Interest in East Asian cultures and languages is a plus. Pay is negotiable and commensurate with experience, and scheduling is flexible. Interested students please send a BRIEF email stating current school status and relevant technical experience/knowledge, approximate number of hours/week and potential length of service available, desired pay if known, and links to any published web work, to: "jkao" @ the "bu.edu" domain.
ARC/Base Project Student Data Entry Personnel
The ARC/Base bibliographic database of East Asian archaeology is occassionally in need of more students to do data entry and editing work for the project. You must be very attentive to detail, have a working knowledge of available online databases for social science research, and some experience using databases, bibliographic, and/or spreadsheet programs such as Filemaker Pro, MS Access, Excel, Refworks, and/or EndNote. We are particularly interested in students with language skills in East and Southeast Asian languages or Russian. Please contact David Cohen. Student pay is highly competitive.
