The Academy Room, George Sherman Union (GSU)
Join us for a lecture by Kenneth Andrew Jeyaretnam, Secretary-General of the Reform Party in Singapore. Singapore is usually ranked near the bottom on global indices of political and civil freedom put out by institutions like Freedom House. It is characterised as not free. However many Western institutions and think tanks that rank countries on their degree of economic freedom put Singapore near the top, outranking even the US. The PAP government have often used this and Singapore's apparent economic success as justification for the restriction of political rights. Mr. Jeyaretnam, an opposition leader in Singapore, will be demonstrating that this economic freedom is largely an illusion and in fact there is a huge degree of state control of the economy. Furthermore, he will argue that by giving up their freedoms, Singaporeans have not really gained anything in return. Their model has been copied by countries like China and Vietnam yet they will run up against the same constraints to growth as Singapore.
