Associate Professor of Law
Charles Whitehead's principal areas of research
include securities regulation, corporate governance, regulation of
financial institutions, domestic and international business transactions,
and Japanese law. He teaches courses in corporations and securities
regulation. In addition to teaching, Professor Whitehead is on the
Board of Directors of the U.S.-Japan Bridging Foundation and has been
a panelist, reviewing Fellowships for Advanced Research in the Social
Sciences on Japan, for the National Endowment for the Humanities. Professor
Whitehead practiced law in New York, London, and Tokyo for several
years before entering academia, including eight years in Japan where
he was also a member of the Nippon Keidanren and Keizai
Doyukai. He
served as an editor and translator of the Journal
of Law in Japan.
Among his most recent writings is “What's Your
Sign – International Norms, Signals, and Compliance,” in
the Michigan Journal of International Law (2006), which analyzes Japan’s
compliance with the Basel Accord on banking capital.
