Ha Jin (pen name for Xuefei Jin) is professor in the Creative Writing Program and the English Department. He became a member of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army at the age of fourteen, and his novel Waiting about the life of a PLA medical officer received the National Book Award in 1999 and the PEN\Faulkner Award in 2000. He is also the author of three collections of short stories: Ocean of Words, Under the Red Flag, and The Bridegroom.  He also wrote three books of poetry ("Between Silences," "Facing Shadows," and "Wreckage"). His other novels include In the Pond, The Crazed, and War Trash (PEN\Faulkner Award 2005). His most recent work is the libretto of "The First Emperor" (co-authored with Tan Dun). In 2006 he was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
