Religion and World Affairs, Director of the Program on Islam and Civil
Society.
Robert Hefner’s primary areas of interest include religion and
modernity; Muslim politics and Islamic social movements; and social and
political theory. His regional focus is Southeast Asia, with a
special emphasis on Indonesia and Malaysia. His most recent books
are Schooling Islam: The Culture and Politics of Modern Muslim Education (with
Muhammad Qasim Zaman; 2006) and Remaking Muslim Politics: Pluralism,
Contestation, Democratization (2005).
