As an archaeologist focusing on China, David Cohen's primary areas of interest and research include state formation and ethnicity in early Bronze Age China as well as the Pleistocene-Holocene transition and the origins of agriculture in East Asia. He is involved in several fieldwork projects excavating late Neolithic and early Bronze Age sites in the lower Yellow River and early agricultural sites in the middle Yangzi River regions.
