We’re pleased to announce a new course on Indian film and literature by Dr. Abhisheka. What are the central concerns of traditional Indian thought, and how are they negotiated in the modern world? This course will pursue this question by surveying trends in cinema and twentieth century fiction, paying special attention to the way they handle the themes of samskara, dharma and adharma, moksha, heroism and romantic love. Our texts will consist of films and film clips (both commercial and independent art) showing how Bollywood engages with social and philosophical issues; novels and short stories by socially engaged major Indian authors (in English or in English translation- works from a variety of Indian languages are included); and secondary readings to provide the cultural context and socio-cultural background. The course will be taught in English and there are no prerequisites. [download flyer]
