Job: Development Manager

Commonwealth Shakespeare Company is currently restructuring its Development department, including outsourcing grant writing to a freelance grant writer and engaging a Special Events Firm/Event Planner for its Annual Gala in April. The Development Manager will supervise these outsourced services while providing leadership and management of CSC’s in-house fundraising operations. A member of CSC’s senior management team, s/he will report directly to CSC’s Founding Artistic Director and Managing Director, and will work closely with CSC’s Board of Trustees and Special Events Committees to maximize support for one of Boston’s most visible and respected performing arts organizations.

In its new Development Manager, CSC is seeking an energetic, entrepreneurial individual who will expand the Company’s existing fundraising efforts, including: individual giving (with special focus on Major Gifts), institutional support, and special events. The position requires a highly organized development professional capable of managing a comprehensive fundraising plan while constantly seeking new partnerships with local foundations and philanthropists. S/he should have a genuine enthusiasm for fundraising and organizational storytelling, and will be responsible for cultivating prospects and closing deals.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership and Department Management

  • Supervise the activities of the Development department, including: the annual fund, major donor cultivation and stewardship, board relations, foundation and government grants, special events, in-kind donations and special projects.
  • Work collaboratively with CSC’s Development and Events Associate on annual giving and special events. Supervise a part-time, freelance grant writer and a part-time, freelance Event Planner.
  • Direct permanent and seasonal development staff, interns, and volunteers in all fundraising endeavors.
  • Establish annual and long-range goals, budgets, projections, and initiatives. Provide monthly reports and financial updates. Track pledges and follow-up on accounts receivable.
  • Supervise maintenance of donor files and records, and the timeliness of donor communications.
  • Research new opportunities for arts/theater funding at the local, state, and national level.
  • Represent CSC by attending civic and cultural events in the community and make presentations, as needed.

Individual Giving & Major Gifts Management

  • Maintain ongoing relationships with current donors, sponsors, funders, and business and community leaders. Work closely with the Board of Trustees to develop new prospects in each category.
  • Provide strategy, negotiation, implementation and stewardship for new and current major donors ($1,000+). Ensure that CSC Founding Artistic Director is regularly meeting and communicating with existing major donors and prospects.
  • Manage CSC’s Board of Trustees, including Development and Special Events Committees – providing clear communication and leadership for all volunteer groups.
  • Provide guidance on annual fund campaigns to be executed by Development & Events Associate, including best practices on segmentation and messaging of mail and email appeals.
  • Strategize and implement a robust fundraising campaign around CSC’s 25th Anniversary in 2020.

Institutional Giving & Grants Management

  • Collaborate with CSC’s Director of Marketing on corporate and in-kind sponsorships.
  • Supervise and collaborate with a part-time, freelance grant writer on foundation giving, including: the development and maintenance of grants calendar; proofing grant applications and reports; providing supplemental materials for applications; ensuring that grant requirements are followed properly, including the collection of reporting data.

Special Events Management

  • Work with Special Events Firm/Event Planner, Board of Trustees and volunteer committees to plan events including the Annual Gala, and oversee the execution of each event.
  • Oversee the recruitment of committee members for special events.

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred and/or fundraising certification.
  • At least 6 years experience working in fundraising, with at least 2 in a management or leadership position.
  • Proven success in grants writing/management, major gifts stewardship, board relations and special events.
  • Ability to cultivate strong interpersonal relationships and to articulate the CSC mission to a wide range of audiences in a variety of ways.
  • Experience with Fundraising databases required. Experience with DonorPerfect highly desirable.
  • Direct experience with financial tracking and reporting.
  • Superb communication skills, both oral and written, and strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to successfully manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Enthusiasm for working collaboratively, in a hands-on fashion, with a small but dedicated team.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends staffing performances and events.
  • In-depth knowledge and experience with Boston’s philanthropic community, particularly in the arts.
  • Passion for the arts and theater (including Shakespeare).

HOURS AND COMPENSATION
This is a full-time position, especially during the summer season when hours are more than 40 per week. Some evening and weekend hours required throughout the year coinciding with performances and special events. Title and compensation commensurate with experience. Includes monthly healthcare stipend, generous time-off program, and 401K retirement plan with 3% employer match.
