Urban Improv is seeking an actor/educator who is also a musician to join our improv troupe starting in September. The actors/educators work in a creative and collaborative ensemble. They develop and present songs and scenes that are relevant to the lives of the elementary, middle and high school students in our program. A true passion for the mission and understanding of the community we serve are vital. Our actor/educators are invested in the youth they work with and strive to achieve the goals and mission of the program. Our musicians are alos actor/educators in the program.
About Urban Improv
Urban Improv is an educational and youth development program that uses structured theater improvisation to teach decision-making, conflict resolution, impulse control, and social/emotional skills.
Founded in 1993, Urban Improv provides interactive workshops that challenge students to deal creatively with major issues in their lives. Improvisational themes include violence and conflict resolution, racism and discrimination, bullying and cyber bullying, substance abuse, peer pressure, harassment, homophobia, teen pregnancy, and stereotyping.
- Excellent keyboard skills
- Ability to read music, play by ear, improvise
- Previous singing experience
- Excellent theatrical acting and improvisational skills
- Previous experience working with children ages 8-16
- Experience working with a diverse population
- Excellent collaborative skills and all-around team player
- Spanish fluency a plus
Urban Improv workshops are usually held four days a week from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm during the school year. Our flagship program is the Boston Public School Workshop series, which runs for 27 weeks. Other rehearsals, performances and appearances occur throughout the year with a range of populations (schools, faculties, community centers, prisons etc.). Urban Improv workshops are held during the school year at the Reggie Lewis Center and Vine Street Center in Roxbury and on site at schools and community centers in Boston and throughout New England.
