Animator creates prints that come to life
OVER THE PAST COUPLE OF YEARS, animator Julie Gratz (CFA’11) has become adept at creating prints that come to life through Augmented Reality Art (ARt)—fish swim through a stream, wheat flutters in a breeze—and feature sound when viewed through the free AR smartphone app Artivive. In 2018 and 2019, she and collaborators Kevin Ryan and Ivo Stoop displayed a series of ARt works at a number of New York galleries, including Anderson Contemporary and b[x] spaces. Gratz, cofounder of animation and motion graphics company Kaleida Studio, created pieces like Endless Forest (pictured) by painting the various elements in Photoshop and then animating them in After Effects. “It started as a personal project,” she says. “I was pouring all my energy into client projects and really missed making something for myself. It’s ended up being the perfect way to combine all my skills—fine art, direction, design, animation—into something that I can share on multiple platforms.” Gratz has taught almost 30 animators how to incorporate augmented reality into their work. “I’ve ended up curating about seven big ARt shows over the last year. It’s been so much fun.”
