Why should I go? The Department of Conservation and Recreation and WBZ NewsRadio 1030 have teamed up once again to host the popular family-friendly Free Friday Flicks Series at the Hatch Shell on the Charles River Esplanade. Tonight’s film is 2018’s Mary Poppins Returns, starring Emily Blunt in the title role. The weekly film series attracts thousands of moviegoers each summer. Films start at sunset (tonight at 8:19), but arrive early to get a good seat and for games and giveaways. Plan to bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on and maybe a picnic as well. The movie’s all-star cast includes Tony and Emmy Award winner Lin-Manuel Miranda and in cameo roles, Oscar winners Meryl Streep and Angela Lansbury and Tony and Emmy winner Dick Van Dyke, who starred alongside Julie Andrews in the 1964 Mary Poppins. Set 25 years after the original, Mary Poppins Returns sees the famous nanny coming back to help the grieving Banks family following a tragedy.
