  1. To state that LL Bean is best known for boxy turtle necks and flannel pajamas is absolute nonsense. They are best known for outdoor clothing and equipment and their reputation anfd fame is based on the boot in its many variations. Leon Leonwood Bean invented the boot and was renowned for the no questions asked return policy, which was frequently invoked during the early development of the boot.

Although some of their clothing lines have gone yuppie, their mainstay is outdoor gear and clothing.

I used to buy their outdoor gear (tent, dufflebags, fishing tackle) in the 1950’s when the only store was up a set of creaky wooden stairs above the Freeport post office.

Incidentally, as the owner of a handfull of the famous boots I can confirm that the rubber lower parts of the boots are not black, but brown.

People who write about LL bean should spend a little more time in their stores before trying to write about LL Bean.

    1. I think this is a great story–especially on a day like today! Ted is right. LL Bean has a stellar reputation for quality outdoor products going back decades. And their products are unconditionally guaranteed for life. No wonder they are often rated the #1 online retail company in America.

    2. Probably because it is a fashion accessory, not because of their quality or guarantee.
That’s a pity. Even Professor Bickart failed to mention — or it was not reported– that the boot is one of the iconic products of a company with what is likely the very best customer service in the country. That will endure regardless of whether the boot is regarded as a coveted fashion statement.

      1. I agree. Wearing certain items makes a statement. These boots make a statement, “I’m New England, I’m outdoors-y, I don’t care too much.”

        I still love llbean.
