  1. Um “protecting our young from the whining:” is that just another way of saying “we don’t want to tell them they are going to have a hard time getting their own funding when they graduate, because we would like to exploit them to advance our own careers as cheap labor” ?

  2. This is a very nice piece of journalism that delivers an accurate assessment of the current funding climate. However the opinion that being awarded an R01 signifies becoming card-carrying, bona fide independent researcher is a stretch. Without reservation being awarded your first RO1 is certain a noteworthy achievement. Kudos. Getting your RO1 renewed is the rite of passage into being a
    true recognized researcher. Getting your first RO1 simply means you have a good idea and some supportive data…now lets see what you can do!
