BU to Test Emergency Systems on Tuesday
Training simulation will be held at GSU
A full-scale emergency training exercise, involving a simulated shooting on campus, will take place in the George Sherman Union tomorrow, August 19, beginning at 8 a.m. The BU Police Department and the Office of Emergency Planning and Response will be working with University leaders and public safety officials from Brookline and Boston to refine emergency procedures and to test BU’s notification systems and response times.
The exercise is the last of three conducted by BU this summer, although previous drills were held in a “tabletop” format, where the procedures were discussed instead of implemented. Tomorrow’s drill will involve actual procedural simulations from BU and public safety personnel.
“We will be testing not only our police response to the scene of a shooting, but also our emergency notification systems with a partial BU alert to the affected buildings, and a test of the BU incident command system,” says BU Police Chief Thomas Robbins. “Our officers have trained for this type of incident, and we will put their training into practice.”
The exercise should be completed by 9:30 a.m.
