Sandy Cohen has worked with the Center since September 2008. He will be receiving his MSW from Boston University’s School of Social Work in September 2010, and is now a full-time MPH student concentrating in Health Policy & Management at the BU’s School of Public Health. He received his B.A. in Psychology and B.A. in Sociology from Georgia State University in December 2007. Prior to leaving Atlanta for BU, Sandy had worked in the field of substance abuse both clinically as a counselor in an intensive outpatient treatment program for adolescents and young adults, and academically as a research assistant for a psychologist revising a book about substance use disorders and also in two University psychology labs. Sandy’s recent clinical work has included counseling internships with a school-based youth substance abuse prevention program, and with a community-based Boston Public Health Commission agency providing adults with outpatient services for drug addiction and co-occurring mental health disorders. Sandy’s research interests include the etiology, epidemiology, and effective treatment of substance abuse and other addictive disorders, the development and dissemination of evidence-based practices in public health and social work, and addressing disparities in access to services among vulnerable and marginalized populations.
