Advice to Prospective Contributors
1. We are not looking for contributions that would obviously be at home in
some other journal. Arion seeks to publish articles which capture the
interest of readers both inside and outside the profession. If you propose
submitting a paper that has been rejected by one of the professional journals,
we urge you to rewrite it. The fact that it wasn't quite dull enough to be
accepted there doesn't mean that it is lively enough for Arion. The
literary essay, rather than the usual academic article, is best suited to
Arion's purpose of integrating learning and imagination. We value most
the contributor who speaks across the disciplines: the author who can write on
Sophocles, say, in a way that engages the student of Shakespeare.
2. There are no strict limits on length and style--each submission to
Arion should find its own length and its own voice. Book reviews may be
essay length and extend beyond the issues as defined in the book considered.
Illustrations are encouraged for submissions using a visual approach.
3. We assume, in our contributors, a marked preference for primary literature
and a command of the secondary literature so easy that it does not need
displaying. Endnotes (where required at all) should be both brief and
readable.
4. Greek and Latin should be translated. Longer passages from the modern
languages also need to be translated. Translations (which may be either literal
or interpretative) should be placed in the body of the text, immediately below
the quotation. A familiar Greek word or phrase should be transliterated.
Passages in Greek and Latin should not be prolonged beyond the immediate needs
of your argument. The choice between the Greek and the Latin form of a Greek
proper noun we consider a matter of individual taste. For questions of style and
reference, please consult the Chicago Manual of Style; for abbreviations
of classical authors and periodicals, L'Année Philologique, LSJ,
and the Oxford Latin Dictionary.
5. Electronic submissions should be sent to arion@bu.edu. You may also mail your submission to 621 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA 02215; it it is on a CD or in some other medium, please include a printout. Microsoft Word and PDF formats are preferred. In all cases typescripts, including endnotes and Greek in quotation, should be double-spaced.
6. To ensure anonymity in the review process, the author's name should appear
only on the cover page, and nowhere else in the body of the article or the
footnotes (self-references should be camouflaged). If you want your manuscript
returned to you, please include a stamped, self-addressed envelope.
