BD Wong: A Profile of An Actor
This exhibition follows the career of the multi-talented actor BD Wong, beginning with childhood photos of the young San Francisco native, including a photograph from a high school production of How To Succeed in Business, Without Really Trying. Wong made his professional New York stage debut in 1982 in a production of Androcles and the Lion, which is documented here. In 1988, BD Wong stunned the New York theatre world with his performance as Song Liling in David Henry Hwang's M. Butterfly. The exhibition includes early draft pages of the script, with BD Wong's notations, a series of photographs documenting the extraordinary production, material related to a variety of awards that Wong accumulated for his performance; and personal notes from fellow-cast member John Lithgow and audience member, Katherine Hepburn. The exhibition continues with photos and correspondence related to some of Wong's better known film work, including Father of the Bride, Jurassic Park, Seven Years in Tibet, and Mulan. There are photographs, correspondence and annotated script pages from other projects involving the talented Mr. Wong, including the HBO made-for-television film And the Band Played On and the HBO television series Oz. Finally, there is material related to BD Wong's book, Following Foo, his dramatic account of the premature birth of his son, Jackson, published in 2003.
