In recent times, there has been a growing interest in the topic of phonotactics. While most explanations for recurring phonotactic patterns in the world’s languages tend to be grounded in perception, some aspects of phonotactic preferences seem to be better explained invoking articulatory ease. In addition, a third possible approach to phonotactics is to abstract from both perceptual and articulatory factors and to consider it as part of grammatical competence (e.g., in generative frameworks).
The aim of the workshop is to bring together scholars interested in the role of perception, production and cognition in shaping phonotactic preferences. Language-specific and comparative analyses are equally welcomed.
This workshop on phonotactics is to be considered the third edition of the successful workshops that have taken place in Pisa in November 2013 (http://linguistica.sns.it/phonotactics_2013/home.html) and in Cortona in September 2012 (http://linguistica.sns.it/phonotactics/home.html), organized by Pier Marco Bertinetto, Chiara Celata, Basilio Calderone, Bernard Laks and Atanas Tchobanov.
