Annual African Leaders' State of Africa Report

The Annual African Leaders' State of Africa Report offers a much-needed commentary on politics and policies from the perspective of the individuals shaping those trends.

Presently, there are a couple of publications - the Competitiveness Report and Transparency International's Report on Corruption - that focus attention on Africa, though not exclusively. While both reports make a valuable contribution to understanding Africa's potential and problems, there is one critical perspective that has not been chronicled on an ongoing and systematic way: the perspective of leaders on the continent who are furthering democratic governance and free market reform. The African Leaders' Report is meant to address this glaring need.

An elite group of students from APARC’s American African Universities (AAU) Collaborative prepared regional comparative analysis papers of development issues using the African Leaders State of Africa Report 2009. Participating universities included Boston University in Massachusetts; Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia; the University of Ghana at Legon; and the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. Faculty at each university identified students to participate in the project and held regular meetings with students as they developed their papers. Student Fellows then met with their faculty advisors for participation in the African Leaders State of Africa Report Student Forums, a project that convened faculty members and students to facilitate discussion on aspects of democratization and free-market reform on the African continent.

This initiative further helped disseminate the expertise of various African faculty and American faculty with the students that represent the next generation of leadership. The Forum is particularly timely in that it facilitated dialogue among those who are actively engaged in discussions about Africa’s past, present, and future.
