International Donates "Inside Africa" tapes to APARC
On January
23, 2002 Eric Ludgood, managing editor of CNN International,
presented APARC and Boston University with the first installment
of the collected archived tapes of Inside Africa, a
half-hour current affairs weekly program which provides global
viewers with an inside look at economic, social, and cultural
affairs and trends in Africa. The tapes are the first acquisition
for APARC's president library, and CNNI's ongoing donation

The
Lloyd G. Balfour Foundation Awards $1 million to the Balfour
Presidents-in-Residence Program
APARC recently
received a $1 million grant from the Balfour Foundation to launch
a residency program that will bring former African presidents
to the University beginning in September 2002. The Balfour Foundation,
which is administered by FleetBoston, promotes educational efforts
that help underserved populations. An event at FleetBoston's
downtown Boston headquarters on February 4, 2002 heralded the
launch of the program, and featured Keynote Speaker Walter H.
Kansteiner III, the U.S. assistant secretary of state for African
affairs, who said promoting democracy in Africa and Western
private investment on the continent are among his office's top
priorities. [news

Former
ambassador to head new African research center
To judge by headlines
alone, Africa's modern history would appear as an ongoing
parade of horrors: famine, civil wars, racial strife, and
an AIDS epidemic that has claimed millions of lives. But as
U.S. ambassador to Tanzania for the past two years, Charles
Stith saw a much more complex and hopeful picture emerging
in Africa. He brings that experience with him to launch and
direct the Boston University African Presidential Archives
and Research Center. [news

New
African Research Center to Attract Ex-Presidents
To combat
a lack of knowledge about Africa and its politics, Boston
University will develop an African Presidential Archives and
Research Center over the next year, according to director
Rev. Charles Stith. I think Americans generally have
very little insight and knowledge of Africa, either historically
and contemporarily, Stith said, adding the current political
changes in Africa are the most significant in recent history,
especially since the shift toward democracy. [news
