Matriculated September 2002
Nicole Hayes’s research focuses on heterosexual relationships in contemporary southern Malawi. She considers how historical developments in Malawi within the last 150 years, such as slave raiding, colonialism, labor migration, and, more recently, structural adjustment and democracy, have impacted relationships between men and women, creating opportunities for multiple-partner sex and eroding already fragile conjugal bonds in this matrilineal region. While traditional gender roles and ideas about male and female sexuality have been reinforced by colonial and postcolonial realities, Nicole explores how sexual behavior has radically altered, setting the stage for Malawi’s tragically high rates of HIV and AIDS.
