Very little is known about the early signs and symptoms of autism spectrum disorders and how these symptoms change during the preschool years. We also do not have much information about what impact the young child with autism has on his or her family, especially the parents.

The Child and Family Project is an important part of our Autism Research Center of Excellence (part of the Studies to Advance Autism Research and Treatment/STAART program). We have teamed up with a group of experts in clinical psychology (Alice Carter), family studies (Marsha Seltzer and Marty Krauss), and developmental psychology (Hill Goldsmith and Aline Sayer) to work on this innovative longitudinal study.

Help us learn more about autism, human development, and the way our brains process language and social information! Click here to let us know you'd like to participate in one of our exciting research studies.

Our participants are toddlers who have received a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder or Pervasive Developmental Disorder and who are currently enrolled in early intervention. We plan to see each child once a year for several years. We will conduct diagnostic and developmental evaluations of the children and will interview parents and caregivers about their children's behavior, the services and other treatments their children are receiving, and about their own family history, current family life, and personal well-being.

This study is conducted at Boston University School of Medicine. Families come to Boston University for one visit annually. We cover transportation and parking costs, and offer small gifts such as toys to the children.

Each participating family receives diagnostic and cognitive/language evaluations for their child, and our professional staff will answer questions that parents and caregivers may have about their child's current behavior.

However, please note that we are no longer enrolling new participants in this study. Thanks very much to all the families who have shown interest in our research and who continue to let us see how their children are growing!
