Charlene Roise is president
of Hess, Roise and Company, an historical consulting firm based
in Minneapolis. The firm specializes in projects involving architectural
and landscape architecture history, social and intellectual history,
and the history of technology. Her undergraduate work was completed
at Saint Olaf College, where she was awarded a B.A. with majors
in history, American studies, and German. Charlene has worked on
a broad range of preservation projects at Hess, Roise, including
historic structure reports for President Garfield's estate in Ohio;
statewide historic bridge surveys in many Midwestern states; Historic
American Engineering Record documentation studies of the South Omaha
stockyards and Project Looking Glass at Offutt Air Force Base; a
contextual study of the Grand Rounds park and parkway system in
Minneapolis; an historic tax-credit application for the $18 million
Grain Belt Brew House renovation; and a National Register nomination
for the John Dwan Office Building in Two Harbors, the first headquarters
of Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing (3M). Before joining Hess,
Roise in 1990, she worked as a preservation planner at the Rhode
Island Historical Preservation & Heritage Commission in Providence,
sold commercial real estate specializing in historic properties,
and managed a family business. Charlene has served on the Board
of Advisors of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and
the Board of Directors of Preservation Alliance of Minnesota and
is currently a member of the boards of Artspace Projects and the
Cultural Landscape Foundation and the advisory board of No Name
Exhibitions. She received a leadership fellowship from the Bush
Foundation in 2001, allowing her to take a seven-month sabbatical
to study preservation issues related to post-World War II resources.
