Dr. Fine received his B.A. in Biochemistry from University of California at Berkeley, and his PhD in biochemistry from Brandeis University. He did postdoctoral research at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, England. Dr. Fine joined the faculty of BUSM in 1971 and is currently Professor of Biochemistry and Research Professor of Neurology. He was Director of the Geriatrics Research, Educational and Clinical Center (GRECC) at the Edith Norse Rogers VA Medical Center in Bedford, MA from 1985 until 1991, and is currently Associate Research Director.
Dr. Fine’s research interests are focused on the role of the enzyme, Insulin Degrading Enzyme (IDE), in degrading the Amyloid Beta Peptide (Aß) in the blood vessels of the brain and is currently working with colleagues to discover possible drugs to increase the level of this enzyme. He also works on discovering novel peptides in the brain.
Dr. Fine serves as the Associate Director of Basic Research for the BU ADC. He also serves as the Director of the BU ADC Pilot Grant Program.
Dr. Fine received a Merit Award for his research from the National Institute of Aging. He also served on both NIH and DVA study sections.
