She earned her M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Mathematical Statistics from Boston University. She joined the Boston University School of Public Health Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics in 1981 as an Assistant Professor.

Research Interests

Dr. Cupples research has focused on collaborative efforts in Alzheimer’s, Huntington and heart diseases. In Alzheimer disease she has specifically focused on genetic studies and gene by environment interaction upon the development of Alzheimer disease. Another important area of research is in risk prediction of Alzheimer disease, particularly in the context of genetic risk. She has been intimately involved in the development of statistical methods for these predictions.

ADC Role

At present, Dr. Cupples serves as the Senior Statistician in the ADC's Data Management & Statistics Core, and is a Co-Investigator on the MIRAGE and REVEAL studies. The MIRAGE Study is focused on research in gene by environmental effects on Alzheimer disease while the REVEAL study is a clinical trial that evaluates the effects of informing adult children of Alzheimer patients of their genetic risk of developing disease.

Memberships/Honors

Dr. Cupples is the recipient of the Scotch Award for excellence in Teaching. She is a member of the American Statistical Association, the Biometrics Society, the Society for Epidemiologic Research, the American Society of Human Genetics and the International Genetic Epidemiology Society.
