Background

Dr. Sanford Auerbach completed his undergraduate studies at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. He earned his medical degree at New York Medical College and then completed his medical internship at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He then moved to the Boston University School of Medicine where he completed his training in Neurology and then went on to complete a fellowship in Behavioral Neurology. Dr. Auerbach then joined the faculty of the Department of Neurology. For a period of time, he devoted part of his efforts to neurorehabilitation and managed the brain injury unit at Braintree Hospital, in addition to developing a clinical program for Alzheimer’s disease at Boston Medical Center. Dr. Auerbach then directed all of his efforts to activities at Boston Medical Center and the School of Medicine. He also developed an interest in sleep medicine and became the director of the Sleep Disorders Center at Boston Medical Center. In recent years, his efforts have been split between Sleep Medicine and Behavioral Neurology with an emphasis on dementia. In addition to his activities in the BU ADC, he has been active in the Dementia project of the Framingham Study. He has been active in a variety of local and national committees. He has been an active member of the Alzheimer's Association and has served as a member and recent chair of its Board of Directors. He has been active in administrative management of the department and had served as the interim chair of the Department of Neurology. Dr. Auerbach is an Associate Professor of Neurology and Psychiatry. He is a board certified neurologist and a board certified sleep specialist.

Research Interests

Dr. Auerbach’s research interests have included a wide range of topics. In addition to his interests in sleep, he has been engaged in clinical research on the clinical manifestations of Alzheimer’s disease.

ADC role

Dr. Auerbach has participated in a variety of activities in the ADC. He has been a co-investigator of several studies, including HOPE, MIRAGE, ADAPT, and ALADDIN. He was also the principal investigator for the recently completed Lecithin study.

Dr. Auerbach is a member of several associations, including the American Academy of Neurology, Behavior and Cognitive Neurology Society, Association of Professional Sleep Societies, and the Alzheimer’s Association.
