The CLASP-AD study is a research study that is funded by the NIH to examine whether the use of statins, a group of medicines used to lower cholesterol, can help in reducing the progression of Alzheimer’s. This study is using Simvastatin (Zocor). About 40 sites country-wide are participating and a total of 400 people will be enrolled.
Patients diagnosed with mild or moderate Alzheimer’s disease are enrolled in the study where they take either simvastatin or placebo and are followed for 20 months with evaluations in cognitive test performance, blood tests and physical examinations. The regular medications prescribed for Alzheimer’s disease and all other medications are not affected by participating in the study.
Who is eligible to participate?
You are eligible to participate if you are at least 50 years old, have been diagnosed with mild or moderate Alzheimer’s disease, have a relative or friend willing to accompany you for 8 study visits in the 20 months and have normal cholesterol levels.
What happens at the visits?
Participants will be given a physical examination and blood tests to determine cholesterol level and to ensure there are no underlying diseases that may prevent taking the study drug. A very brief evaluation of memory is also done to determine eligibility. In the next visit more memory testing is done to establish a baseline and study medications are started. The following 6 visits are to evaluate for any side effects and to perform memory evaluations to determine the effectiveness of the medicine.
