Genetics

Scientists and clinicians at our Center are currently working on several different areas of genetics research. Dr. Lindsay Farrer, Chief of the Genetics Program at BU School of Medicine, leads the MIRAGE Study which is evaluating the role of both genetic and non-genetic risk factors in the development of Alzheimer’s disease. In the REVEAL Study, Dr. Robert Green and colleagues are exploring methods for - and the impact of – providing genetic-based Alzheimer’s disease risk assessments to adult children of people with Alzheimer’s disease. Our Center is also participating in the LOAD Study, which seeks to identify additional genes that may be risk factors for late-onset Alzheimer’s disease.

In addition to these ongoing clinical research studies, our Center also has a well-respected Transgenic Mouse Core, led by Dr. Neil Kowall and Dr. Alpaslan Dedeoglu. This core is responsible for overseeing the DNA isolation, storage, and genotyping of biological samples collected for research by the Clinical Core.  The Transgenic Mouse Core also breed, characterize, and maintain mice with several of the rare genetic mutations that cause AD. These mice serve as models for exploring the biological basis of Alzheimer’s disease and possible treatment methods for humans.
