Health Education & Self-Care at Home

The purpose of this study is to confirm the acceptability of a home safety booklet for diverse family caregivers of persons with dementia of the Alzheimer’s type. The booklet, “Keep Your Home Safe for a Person with Memory Loss” is based on research on family preferences for home safety modifications. Our overall goal is to decrease the risk of injury in the home.

Who is eligible to participate?

Primary family caregivers of a person with dementia of the Alzheimer’s type who are current caregivers or have been a recent caregiver for a person with dementia living at home.

What happens at the visits?

Participants can join a focus group or an individual meeting where they will read the home safety booklet and then answer questions about the booklet’s attractiveness and acceptability; whether the information is clearly presented; and whether the recommendations are easy to implement. An individual session takes approximately 30 – 45 minutes; the focus group sessions take approximately 90 minutes.

Where is the study taking place?

The project is currently located at the Bedford VA Medical Center and the Boston Health Care System.
