Caregiving is a major focus of research at our Center. We recognize that Alzheimer's profoundly affects not only the person with the disease, but also family caregivers. We have therefore designed several studies to address the many challenges posed by caregiving for someone with Alzheimer's disease (AD).
For example, Drs. Kathy Horvath and Rose Harvey have been developing educational materials designed to assist caregivers in the area of home safety. They are currently testing a home safety booklet that offers tips to caregivers on how to keep their home safe for the person with AD.
Dr. Robert Stern is leading an innovative collaboration between our Center and the MIT AgeLab in which an educational intervention for caregivers is being developed. This intervention will address one of the most significant and challenging issues faced by caregivers of individuals with dementia: the question of when the person with dementia should limit or stop driving, and how the caregiver should take action around dementia and driving.
Dr. Maureen O'Connor is the lead investigator in a newly funded study designed to increase caregiver self efficacy in order to maximize caregivers' utilization of behavioral management strategies to modify problem behaviors in individuals with AD and to reduce caregiver burden.
