The BU ADC is participating in a large new clinical trial designed to evaluate the effectiveness of a new medication in slowing the progression of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The BU ADC is one of approximately 100 sites participating in this multi-center study sponsored by Myriad Pharmaceuticals. Dr. Robert C. Green and Dr. Alan Mandell are co-directors of the study at its BU site.

The study medication, Flurizan, is a compound derived from a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) called flurbiprofen. It has been shown in preliminary studies to reduce brain levels of amyloid- beta-42, a toxic protein that is thought to be a primary cause of AD. Dr. Green recently commented on the study: “I am very excited about this new medication, as it holds much promise as a treatment to slow AD. Flurizan has no prominent side effects and, unlike currently approved treatments for AD, it directly targets the amyloid problem.”

Individuals 55 years or older who live in the community, have mild to moderate AD, and have a reliable caregiver are encouraged to participate.
