African Americans & Alzheimer’s

Mother and daughter Alzheimer’s disease affects ethnic minority groups at higher than average rates. Research has suggested that ethnic minorities with memory loss often receive less formal treatment than their white counterparts, and the treatment they do receive often comes later in the disease course. Ethnic minority groups are often underrepresented in AD research, both as investigators and study participants.

There are initiatives underway nationwide to help address these disparities. The BU ADC has a particular focus on African Americans and Alzheimer’s, with past and current initiatives related to research, brain donation, community  outreach and professional education.
